A blank canvas

You might remember in my last post I mentioned I was about to start on a commission for a lovely client? Well, I thought this might be the perfect time to share a little of how I go about painting a commissioned work - before I forget all about taking pics along the way.here she is...a nice (big) blank canvasMy lovely client, H, spoke to me about creating a painting for a large wall in her

Pimp my pic

As soon as I finished my latest painting, I couldn't help myself...these rooms were ripe for the picking.love your work Nate, hope you don't mind that I've done a little redecorating for you. Curiosity Shop

It probably comes as no surprise that I love vintage books. My favourites are those on natural history, and I love scouring dusty old bookshops for these treasures. And I guess it's a natural progression that some of my favourite painting subjects come from nature. I'm preparing for a solo exhibition later this year (very exciting! I'll share all the deets soon) and now that I'm almost rid of

Sweet Peas and Vintage Blue

Well, it was a little longer in the making than I thought...what with the end of the school term, and all the last minute organising needed before the holidays. All that glitters....

When I'm designing a large piece, I sometimes paint a little watercolour study first, to play with colours and proportions. I'm working on a large canvas at the moment, and wanted to add a little bit of shimmer. This watercolour is my 'first draft' so to speak, so I added a bit of drama with the slash of gold through the centre:'All that Glitters'watercolour and gouache on paper210mm x 297mmI

Feather your nest

I've always been a bit of a collector. As a kid, I used to keep little white pebbles (or 'lucky stones' as we called them), leaf skeletons, coral and shells from our beach holidays (along with a few poor little hermit crabs that I used to stash in the car without my parents' knowledge )....and feathers. I always loved finding feathers, particularly white ones, as my Nan used to tell me they were

Blue and white times two

I know my posts often feature blue and white, but what can I say, I love it. So here's the latest painting in my blue and white china series - "China Blue"."China Blue"watercolour on paper8" x 11" (210mm x 297mm)original on hold, but prints are now available on EtsyBut this isn't the only new blue and white piece around here. On the weekend, I was shopping with Mum and stumbled across this

Inspired

Sometimes, inspiration can be hard to come by. I've had times in the past when painting has been a torturous process, and I've come to learn that often, it's other stuff going on in our lives that blocks creativity. Stress, upheaval...you name it, it can wreak havoc. Of course, these things can act as a catalyst for some artists, but for me, it's rarely the case. Lately, it's been the opposite -

Belle Bijou

This new painting has been a long time coming. Sometimes, I start four or five paintings at once, and then finish them when the mood takes me. But as bright colour has been the order of the day lately, it was nice to put the finishing touches to this piece.'Belle Bijou'watercolour and gouache on paper8" x 10"prints now available in my Etsy shopI thought it would be fun this time to add some

Just a little bit cheeky......

You might remember this post, when I mentioned I was working on a commission for some large abstracts? Well, I finished another one today, which I'll show you in just a minute. Being the impatient soul that I am, I can't wait to see photos of my work in situ, but sometimes it can take quite a while. So, I thought it would be fun to redesign some rooms with the click of a button, all via the

Vintage school chalkboard

Years ago, I was lucky enough to stumble across an old school blackboard, complete with easel, at a garage sale. I snapped it up for the princely sum of $5, and I've used the easel ever since in my studio. The chalkboard, however, has sat in my shed until yesterday. I've decided it's time to have a more organised system for keeping track of all my paintings on order, and as I'm a very visual

I've been a little busy....
